That's what I really like about this new trio. The Doctor is able to maintain his mystique, Nardole serves as a talking head for fans (of Who or just science fiction in general) and Bill as one for casual viewers. It's a nice set up. I don't know... I think the viewers want the Doctor to be somewhat human or be kind of mad eccentric. Capaldi's just... alien. The key words there are "I think"

To be honest "I think" the pacing is all wrong under Moffat. Even exciting episodes like Oxygen seem to go slow. RTD Who seemed to be breakneck pace all the time.

I find this viewpoint really odd, probably because I don't normally worry about how my opinion of a television show is perceived by others. I'm reminded of Colin's own words to fans at a recent convention: "Get a grip." Haha! Sixie speaks! What brought about that response? Colin said the fans were getting worried after the announcement of The Last Adventure. Basically they thought he was quitting Big Finish. During the Q&A Colin explained that he wasn't leaving anytime soon and told the audience to "Get a grip." Everybody laughed.

Mmm, but the benefit of an additional companion (Nardole in this case) means that the Doctor can be humanised by proxy. Compare his actions towards the end of Deep Breath to those in Oxygen. They're both sucky positions, but he comes across as more relatable in the latter because Nardole acts as conscience. The alien behaviour is given a sympathetically aspect to it that the Doctor himself wouldn't talk about -- revenge, suicide, etc. Ah but Nardole's not human he's been programmed by the Doctor and so far exhibits more non-human traits (the slightly cold, awkward outside observer)

And that's certainly true as well, but he provides a reference point for the viewer via Bill; e.g. "Never sees the tears," "He's not okay," "So this is about revenge?", etc. It's a bit like how in original Trek, Kirk was instrumental in exposing Spock's human side, while Bones provoked his more Vulcan aspects. There's probably a better example out there, but I'm stumped to think of it.

To be honest "I think" the pacing is all wrong under Moffat. Even exciting episodes like Oxygen seem to go slow. RTD Who seemed to be breakneck pace all the time. I feel :3 that's because even with the arc words that RTD era's had, each story was treated like an episode of Thunderbirds. A self-contained 45-50 minute film with a grand scope where entire worlds are affected by the calamity that's unfurling. The Moffat era has been decidedly smaller in scope and played the long game with its story arcs. It wasn't something lurking in the background, it often got shunted into centre focus. The problem there of course was that the standalone tales felt a bit unloved as a result. They became more like filler rather than the main attraction, the destination more important than the journey, which is not what Doctor Who is really about. The benefit of this season is that it feels a little bit like Dark Eyes or something similar, even if it lacks the umbrella title. Each story feels like a new chapter that is slowly contributing to a broader picture while still being entertaining in its own right.
