I've seen some odd criticism of the bedroom scene online. Okay, I'm gay and I'm not trying to police anyone's experience....but it was funny, yes? It's okay to laugh at our past anixeties? You mean the Pope and the priests in the bedroom? It wasn't sexual anxieties that made me cringe over that scene.

Is anyone else kind of in denial about Calpadi leaving? I experienced the original series out-of-order first time around as a kid (picking up Target novelisations and saving up for VHS tapes as a nineties kid) and only watched the whole damn series from start to finish years later, but with Teannet and Smith as much as I felt sad over, there was still the excitement of the new. Don't get me wrong, I'm still excited for the new Doctor, but these last few episodes and this series take on Twelve really are making it hard for me to let him go, especially given just how much of a powerhouse and seasoned actor Calapadi.
Big Finish's take on the era in any form can't come soon enough.

Big Finish's take on the era in any form can't come soon enough. I agree entirely with all of this. I wasn't entirely sure of him at the beginning, but soon came round - the sign of a good Doctor! But, unlike some previous incarnations, I like Capaldi more and more with each subsequent story. No overacting, no unneccessary mannerisms, no catchphrases, just brilliant acting every time. The ratings slide is a source of disappointment for me on so many levels, and I just hope no-one connected with the show currently takes that personally.

Random thought while watching the episode: what if this whole 'duplicate Earth' business pops back up in the finale? As in, one of the Monks' more substantial creations goes awry, flies off into space... And becomes known as Mondas? It'd explain Mondas' uncanny resemblance to Earth, not to mention playing into the fact that the original Cybermen are back.

Caught up on Who during the holiday weekend, and wow, I had a different experience than...apparently just about everyone.
I'll be back later when I can properly modulate my thoughts about the episode into a format appropriate for a post here, but I can't remember actively disliking an episode as much as I did this one.

I can't remember actively disliking an episode as much as I did this one. Dear boy, that seems unlikely On the whole, I actually liked most of the episodes I’ve discussed here, though I do think some of them were undermined (in some places seriously) by some narrative or structural elements. H To steal a line from Iain Banks, mistake not my current state of joshing gentle peevishness for the awesome and terrible majesty of the towering seas of ire that are themselves the mere milquetoast shallows fringing my vast oceans of wrath. I hated this episode. There was nothing about this episode that I didn’t hate. I hated it so much that I wish it hadn’t been made. I felt like that computer from the Ellison story: “HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.” On reflection, I’m not going to talk about it here, because no matter how I worded my criticisms, I think they would come across as insulting to those of you who liked it. I like and respect everyone here. Doctor Who covers a lot of territory and I’m not going to enjoy every episode. I’m glad you folks liked it. I like talking Doctor Who, but I don't think a lengthy rant would add to the value of this thread.

I'm just going to raise my finger and say, it's an ironic choice given what you've chosen to quote -- I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.

It actually would have been strange for him to be in the Pope hat. You know, I wasn't looking for a serious exchange about the hat, it just served as a pretext to set up the joke about Omega's outfit, but I'm actually kind of happy that I learned something today. I once read that Janet Fielding killed it at her audition, but JNT didn't want to bring her on board, because she was below the minimum height requirement for a flight attendant at the time. I was like, really? You're going to choose this hill to die on? (The same story claims that she lied and convinced him that height requirements were different for Australian hostesses) Doctor Who takes stands about realism at the strangest times.

(No, just the popcorn, really! ) I do appreciate the therapeutic value of a good rant, but when I kvetch about other episodes, it’s not coming from a position of acrimony like this would be here. I think it would be too nasty, and I’d rather not crap all over something a lot of people enjoyed.
