I might have to rewatch as I think I missed some crucial explanations whilst my family talked 😡 But that said I thought it was quite good, a novel use of the translation device beyond filling plot holes, novel monster design and some slightly fleshed out guest characters too. Missy continues to intrigue as well, this arc is much better realised than the Hybrid.
Also that trailer...

Pretty enjoyable, but average episode, good direction, some amusing one liners and nicely pitched performances from the leads, but a tad overly talky and generic.
It did remind me of the movies 'Stargate' and 'Outlander'.

I thought that was lovely for the most part. The kind of episode you watch on a rainy afternoon. The production values seemed particularly stellar this week with that monster, too. Not entirely sure what was going on with those lollipops though, and the music seemed a bit dodgy in spots, too (not the music score itself, mind, it just seemed roughly edited in and didn't really mix with certain scenes).

not entirely sure what to make of this episode,
initial reaction is terrible story but told well. capaldi managed to stay just about the right side of his teeth and eyebrow acting. Bill was solid as usual and nice to see Nardole getting a bigger role this week, I really like him and think he fits well with the team. also have a soft spot for the crows talking stuff. I liked the final missy scenes, would rather have had more of her, than the lets make friends and fight together rubbish to stop the doctors sacrifice, I am intrigued as to what's going on with her.
so to the bad....oh the story! It felt like such a load of old tosh, a monster that needs the light to feed, but hunts in the dark and somehow only wants to eat people. music playing under the hill pro & epi...logue, just unnecessary and poor. and bill with the translator stuff was just badly written and way to late in bills travels for her not to have worked it out before!
but after saying all that, I enjoyed watching it.

I really enjoyed this episode. Thought it was fantastic and greatly told. The Tardis translator was used to great effect and I can wait for a Missy/Master meeting next episode.
Also "Death By Scotland" lol

I liked it.
Agree with muckypup that the way the monster worked was a little confusing, but generally a fun romp with some nice lines thrown in.
I really liked the scene where Bill is thrown by the Roman's attitude towards sexuality and the way it shows how fickle social prejudices can be through history (though you'd think Bill would know about Roman sensibilities given how much she likes the Ninth Legion).
I really hope this Master reformation thing goes somewhere. The arc started out so well then got kinda fudged; now it all depends on how this aspect plays out.

The short extracts we hear of Nardole's rambling stories he mentions to the Picts were quite intriguing cough *Big Finish Gap* cough...

'Eaters of Light' leaves much to be desired, though it's not bad television by any means. It's a better story about fear than the more prentious 'Listen' was, for one thing.
However, after three decades, if a super familair monster runaround was the best Munro could do, it does leave me wondering how much of this was a genuine belief in her abilities versus just having nostalgic name value in the writing team. Surely, this is the sort of story the Beeb get in slushpiles all the time.

After getting of to a great start this Series has settled down to somewhere between "Meh" and "Average" and I think you can tell that Moffat was here out of obligation rather than desire. What's been really annoying has been watching Bill slip backwards into a more generic Companion role, which given that she probably only has two epsiodes left is a shame.

Oh, this is my Twelfth Doctor. Right here. I'm certain this is him. He's understanding but doesn't tolerate any tantrums. "Because it's time to GROW THE HELL UP!"
I don't think we've had a story this competently told in a long time, but I'm in two minds about the plot itself. There are shades of Kinda to just how unusual it is. The more cartoonish elements of the Moffat era are downplayed in favour of, well... A genuinely human drama. Right down to the Doctor and Missy's interactions at the end (complete with visual storytelling via acting). It raises an interesting thought actually: the Romans and the Picts are both portrayed sympathetically and Munro definitely seems to have a handle on the period, so... Could this have worked just as well, possibly even better, as the new series's first pure historical?

That was fine, I guess? I mean, no 'Survival', but there are worse ways to spend an evening...

I had higher hopes for the episode, but it was enjoyable enough. A nice, fun romp, with some lovely moments in it.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I really enjoyed it but I felt the direction was a bit "meh." The script was terrific and the characters were portrayed well and it had that great mix of mysticism and history that some elements of really great Who aspires to. It suffered the NuWho problem of having to fight with the time limit of the story: I can see why the pro/ epilogues were bookended the way they were (and I liked it) but I think it could have been sacrificed for the sake of the story.
The guest characters were great, the mix of history and monster story were great fun and it had a heap of great moments for Bill, Nardole and The Doctor. For those who think it was a filler kind of story, go back to high school and imagine your Lit teacher asking, "What was the writer's intent in using those words or putting that scene there?" - we're getting a reaffirmation of the Doctor's responsibility to those less powerful than himself (we've got a finale and a regeneration coming up), the idea that language is the only thing that separates us from each other and characters making up for poor decisions (Kar and Lucius) by "growing up" (which might be leading into the story which has Missy in charge next week).

I was going to write much the same as you did. You just saved me the trouble by expressing it better than I would have. I thought the whole thing was rather lovely and as the last stand alone episode of 12's run, I felt it did a beautiful job of showing why 12, and indeed this entire TARDIS team, is so special.

Maybe the thing about the Roman's acceptance of LGBT relationships was airbrushed out of the official records.
