It took me YEARS to get over the marriage of that theme to the dodgy graphics on screen. Still I gave it kudos from the first time I heard it by having the "middle 8" in the opening titles.
I liked the graphics, apart from those 'scrunched up pieces of paper' floating through space. To be fair to the designer, he felt the effect was weak too, but had no time or budget to improve it (I've a feeling he was interviewed on the Time and the Rani DVD). I'd say that this was probably what they were going for:

fair enough... that version crushed the original VHS-video quality version like a grape.

Yes! Worst regeneration ever! Horrible 4th wall breaking 'boo-hooing' from Tennant & RTD. It was over-the-top for my tastes, but I can understand why they milked the emotion. Tennant was hugely popular of course, and it was RTD's last stand. Compared to the understated sorrow of The Second Doctor's last hurrah however (for example), I know which I prefer.
It's not just that - for the kids and newcommers, the RTD run was Doctor Who and Teannet WAS The Doctor. It really was an end of era - Moffatt taking over from RTD was highly publicised and Smith was taking over from a nationwide beloved character. There needed to be some form of acknowledgement for that and the audience needed to let go.
I ddin't mind Ten being resentful of his incoming death. Ten tried to mvoe on from the trauma of the Time War, lost the person who gave him happiness and felt after messing Martha's life up and Davros's mindgasmes that he needed to cut himself off from those closest. His only contement was seeing the beauty of time and space - and then ever THAT was taken from him. I don't blame Ten for being bitter. The End of Time reveals parts of The Doctor's headspace in terms of oncoming regeneration we just haven't been privy to in the past, that The Doctor hides and puts a brave face in light of a companion.
As great as the writing and direction on The Water of Mars, I do have issue with where that episode takes The Doctor's character, though, even those others love it.

Ugh, you had to mention the theme tune. I've really loved the Capaldi era, (well if you leave out Moon-Eggs and Magic Forests), but having it coupled with that shrill, annoying theme tune, one that never did "grow" on me... well, it annoys me.
I'm sure we'll get a new theme for the new Doctor(ette), and while I don't think they can get any worse than this, we'll have to see.
The Capaldi era theme is my second favorite! But then again, my favorite is the McCulloch theme, so what do I know? I can see the similarities!
