With Capaldi's run ending at Christmas I though I'd start a general discussion thread to celebrate/discuss the good and bad points of his Doctor and episodes.
For me I'm completely biased, he's everything I've wanted in a new Who doctor and I've been utterly gripped since the first moments of Deep Breath, Capaldi hasn't always had the best scripts to work with (looking at you In The Forest Of The Night), it took a while for the writers to pin down his character and as much as I liked Clara, for too long it felt like he was operating under the shadows of the 11th Doctor's leftover's, but looking back on his era I'm staggered by the hit to miss ratio, for me it's been the most solid and enjoyable run of stories since Series 4 (admittedly many of the New Who eps I've watched just once or twice, some I haven't seen in years) and I'm very sad to see it come to a close.
Through the storylines whether good, bad or somewhere in between Capaldi has anchored the show with his performance i.m.o, a fascinating blend of world weary sarcasm, emotional brittleness and recklessness that reminds me in many ways of Hartnell and Tom Baker's Doctors, but with many touches of his own, and his one man show in Heaven Sent will go down as one of the finest hours in Who history
The 12th Doctor has grown and evolved from a emotionally distant cranky professor type to a compassionate but stern aged rockstar and back, and although much of this development has happened off screen and some would argue it was a little bungled or obstuse, it's been fascinating to see Capaldi/Moffat push the character in new directions, constantly peeling back the layers and reinventing the character as defined by New Who, I'm very much hoping it's something BF can continue one day, there's tonnes of gaps to explore yet..
I've liked the majorty of Capaldi's episodes, and loved more than a few so I found it hard to narrow things down to a top 10, a top 12 seems more fitting:
Mine:
1) Mummy On The Orient Express 2) Heaven Sent 3) The Magician's Apprentice/The Witches Familiar 4) Flatline 5) World Enough And Time/The Doctor Falls 6) Into The Dalek 7) The Husbands Of River Song 8) Extremis 9) The Return of Doctor Mysterio 10) Listen 11) Robot Of Sherwood 12) Thin Ice
What about you? General thoughts on the era and Doctor? What worked for you, and what didn't?

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

In broadcast order:
The Caretaker Flatline Death In Heaven Last Christmas Heaven Sent The Husbands of River Song The Return Of Captain Mysterio The Pilot Thin Ice Oxygen World Enough And Time The Doctor Falls
This was a really hard list to compile: Mr Capaldi has pretty much delivered a consistent performance - whatever the writing of the character - across his entire run and he has been blessed with some brilliant supporting actors and the writing has been mostly excellent, even when the stories have made little sense.

Also, on the whole, I think his era's been pretty inconsistent and one of the worst eras in the show's history.

Also, on the whole, I think his era's been pretty inconsistent and one of the worst eras in the show's history. Certainly not. Every series in the new era is stronger than any in the classic IMO.

Also, on the whole, I think his era's been pretty inconsistent and one of the worst eras in the show's history. This season has been spectacular but his first 2 seasons were shambolic. Started terribly with such a huge issue being made of the fact that Doctor Who is old! Nonsense. An inconsistency in writing The Doctor, his persona changed from week to week. Dull relationship with Clara. Such a shame it couldn't have all been like this year where it all came together.

Alright, that'll be enough blasphemy for one day. :-) I would have to think it over some but I'm pretty sure the bulk of my favorite Capaldi episodes are going to come from the last two seasons. In general, I think a very good effort was made to shape things up a bit over that span. I do appreciate that, and it made for some very enjoyable viewing.

On the whole, I'd say I've enjoyed his era. I loved series 8, series 9 was a bit of a wobble (I found it very average Who - it wasn't bad, but it felt like the show was on auto-pilot), series 10 has been a return to form, though. Capaldi's always been great, even through the not-so-good episodes. Anyway, my top 12 Capaldi episodes:
1. Heaven Sent 2. Mummy On the Orient Express 3. World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls 4. The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar 5. Dark Water/Death In Heaven 6. Extremis 7. Flatline 8. Oxygen 9. Kill the Moon 10. Listen 11. The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion 12. Empress of Mars

12. Time Heist 11. Heven Sent/ hell Bent 10. Oxygen 9. Flatline 8. Mummy on the Orient Express 7. Listen 6. Zygon 2 parter 5. Kill the Moon 4. Knock Knock 3. Empress of Mars 2. Thin Ice 1. World Enough/Doctor Falls
I don't think they're too controversial choices (Kill the Moon is bad science but a great character piece)

I think they wanted to make him too much of a contrast from Smith and that results in odd behaviour from Capaldi. And then in Series 9 they want him to be a lot more like Smith, which caused more problems. That said, I've also found that Capaldi generally feels like a spectator for most of the stories and that he isn't really in control. There are obvious exceptions to this (Heaven Sent and The Doctor Falls). And he also feels a bit basic as a Doctor. I find he's nothing special really. A bit like Davison, I'd say, to an extent.

Well, it is your opinion, but... I'll be honest and say that I completely disagree and I know a lot of others who'd disagree with that.

A lot of Base-Under-Siege stuff there. Out of interest, do you prefer Heaven Sent to Hell Bent?

Also, on the whole, I think his era's been pretty inconsistent and one of the worst eras in the show's history. Whereas I'd argue it's been one of the more consistent, it's my personal favourite era of New Who and for me it rivals the 60's and the Hincliffe Years as one of the most enjoyable, but quality is in the eye of the beholder and that's part of the fun of this thread, everyone will have different opinions.
